Our second ultrasound was quite the fiasco. I wasn't too thrilled to go back to the doctor two weeks after our first ultrasound. I wasn't sure, if anything, of what was going to be seen. Moreover, I knew what to expect from the ever so personal ultrasound procedure. But, I needed a step some direction and definite closure one way or the other. I wanted the doctor to say either "I am sorry but there is nothing there" or "Congrats! You have a strong heartbeat in there". Again, I wanted to hear the latter but I was mentally preparing myself for both. Needless to say, I was very nervous to go to the doctor. But thankfully, my rock, my keeper of sanity, my wonderful husband, was going to go to the doctor's appointment.
The doctor that I go to is about 15-20 minutes from my work in downtown Orlando. Since Josh was going to be coming from home, he was going to pick me up at work and then we could head there together. Josh called me right when he was leaving the house, right on schedule. About 15 minutes into his 30 minute ride to pick me up, he calls my phone and tells me that he has a flat tire but he was going to change it quickly. No worries, I know Josh can change a tire in no time. About 15 minutes later, Josh calls and tells me that he is having problems with the spare and I should just drive myself to the doctor's office so I don't incur a late fee and just wait there for Josh to join me. So I leave from work at the last possible minute to get to the appointment on time. I sign in and explain that if they can push the appointment back at all, I would appreciate it due to Josh's car trouble.
I get a call right as I sat at the doctor's appointment and Josh tells me that he is covered in grease but on his way. However, there is no easy way for him to get to the doctor's office from where he is so it will take him at least 20 minutes to get there. Well, here I was sitting at the doctor's office at 9:05 for my 9:00 appointment. I figured they never get you in right on time so I had a good amount of waiting ahead of me. Not to worry...right? WRONG! The ultrasound tech calls me back and I explain about the car trouble and all the problems we have had so far this morning. She tells me that she is booked solid and has appointments every 20 minutes but she will wait as long as she can. About 10 minutes later, Josh calls me. I tell him to rush as best he can but he tells me he can see the exit he needs to get off at but he is stuck in traffic. Alas, there is an accident blocking part of the road. At this point I can't even sit down in the waiting room because I need him there with me and even though he was doing his best, he wasn't there yet and we were pushing 9:30. I relay the whole conversation to the office staff and the ultrasound tech. The tech, who is less than thrilled with me at this point, tells me to get back into the room and get ready for the ultrasound so when Josh comes in, we can get going.
I headed back to the room, undress and crawl onto the table to wait for the ultrasound and Josh...hoping Josh would come before the ultrasound. I call Josh back and tell him where I am sitting and he needs to be there ASAP. He is so frustrated at this point and tells me "Tell them they are not to do the ultrasound without him". Right. I am supposed to tell this very mad ultrasound tech to hold up for me. Well, I told him that I would do my best. I also tell the office staff that this very dirty and grease covered guy is on his way and please get him back to the ultrasound room as soon as he comes back. So now I am sitting in this room just bouncing off the walls waiting for him. The tech comes back and asks where he is. I call him and he is in the parking lot but there are no spots (busy medical complex). I just tell him to park anywhere! I don't care! GET INTO THIS OFFICE NOW!!! Next thing I know, Josh comes running in the office to the ultrasound room covered up to his elbows in grease with oil stains all over his pants. The ultrasound tech let him use the sink in the room to wash his hands off but it didn't help much.
We started the ultrasound and saw this little blob with a very distinct beating heart. The tech said everything looks good and I am just over 7 weeks along. Josh and I are absolutely at awe at this little blob that we created hanging out deep inside of me. I am so fascinated and holding onto the only piece of Josh's clothes that aren't grease covered because his hands and arms were still very icky!
We finish up the ultrasound and schedule our next appointment. Thankfully the ultrasound tech had printed out a few pictures for us to show the soon-to-be grandparents. Josh and I kept looking at them with amazement when Josh turns to me and says "We have a little bean!"
So that is how our baby got his/her name in utero. We are not finding out whether Bean is a boy or a girl so coming up with a neutral name other than "it" was important. I look forward to telling our baby that Daddy called you Bean from the first moment he saw you.
