1 Banana, 2 Banana, 3 Banana, 4

It is official, we have our first word. While some may argue that she has been saying "Mama" and "Dada" for a little bit already, it is not always directed at anyone in particular. For example, a little finger and the word "Da" or "Dada" may be directed to Josh, the cat or even a complete stranger. Poor Josh...he just wants to hear his daughter call him Daddy or even Dada but right now everything has been Dada. More often than not, I can get Abby to call me Mama but she will also call me Dada. So we have been writing that off as a fluke.

But last week, we had definite sight and name recognition. Normally after every meal we offer Abigail "dessert". That usually is some type of fruit. Bananas, oranges, applesauce, or whatever I happen to have on hand. More often than not, it is a banana. Since she has been calling everything "da" I will say what the item is. The conversation usually goes like this:

Me: Abigail, want some dessert? How about a banana?
Abigail: Da!
Me: Banana
Abigail: Da!

But we finally had a revelation. The conversation was:

Me: Abigail, want some dessert? How about a banana?
Abigail: Da!
Me: Banana
Abigail: Nana
Me: Banana?
Abigail: Nana

After a small celebratory dance, I told Josh that I think she understands what a banana is. But, like when she turned over for the first time, I like to be sure that things aren't a fluke before I shout from the rooftops that my daughter is a genius. Come on, I know she is so you should too!

Abby and I went to Walmart on Sunday to do some shopping. I was in the food section and walked by the giant table of bananas on my way to get other items. I didn't even go over to get bananas and from the cart I saw a little hand reach up to point. Next thing I hear is "Nana". I look over and sure enough, there are bananas!

So I will be able to regale her with stories of how she didn't really say Mama or Dada first but she sure knew her nanas!

Oh, the flood gates are gonna open! "Nanas" now. "No!" next!
